Dear Fellow Investor,
Ni hao! (That's Chinese for "hello.")
As an Inside China Dispatch member, you know better than anyone that profiting from China's growth takes more than looking at stock charts and balance sheets. To invest in a country as large and diverse as China, you need a deep understanding of the culture, events and even the language. We've talked a lot about the Chinese economy and how to profit from its incredible growth, but today I want to discuss something that we haven't covered before: the importance of the Chinese language.
In recent years, Chinese has become an increasingly popular language for both kids and adults to learn. Forward-thinking parents—and especially savvy businesspeople—are either learning Chinese themselves or hiring tutors to teach their children. Renowned global investor Jim Rogers hired a Chinese nanny to teach his daughter Mandarin (China's official language and dominant dialect). Rogers also recently moved his family from New York to Singapore in order to be closer to the action in China and Asia. Another well-known businessperson, Meg Whitman, the CEO of online auction giant eBay, sent her teenage son to Beijing to immerse him in Mandarin.

The Chinese language boom isn't just a Western phenomenon—countries in the East are also experiencing increased demand for Chinese language classes. In South Korea, Chinese has overtaken English as the most popular foreign language that Koreans want to learn. Across the globe, people are recognizing the importance of learning the language of the world's fastest-growing country.
Here in the United States, the Bush administration has placed heavy emphasis on increasing the number of Chinese language programs in American schools. In January 2006, President Bush announced a $114 million initiative designed to increase the number of strategically critical languages—like Chinese and Arabic—taught in U.S. schools. By the summer of 2006, a total of 24,000 American students were studying Chinese. And that number is expected to grow in the coming years.
I'm glad to see that so many people are interested in learning Chinese. The increased interest in Chinese language skills demonstrates a critical shift in worldview. In the past, people focused mostly on local and national events, but now people are expanding their perspectives and thinking globally. I'm hopeful that as more people learn the Chinese language, they'll come to better understand and appreciate the Chinese culture. A greater understanding of China will help nurture improved international relations as the emerging country grows in its strength and power. Learning Chinese for the Right Reasons
Even though Chinese has become a popular language to learn, it's not easy for most non-native speakers to pick up. The U.S. State Department's Foreign Service Institute once reported that it takes a native English speaker more than twice as long to learn Chinese than it does to learn a European language like German or French. Is it really worth the time and effort for non-native Chinese speakers to learn the language?
If you want to become a China expert, it goes without saying that you should learn the language. Just as one would expect an expert on America to know English, anyone claiming to be a leading expert on China should know Chinese. Because of China's rapid economic emergence, many self-proclaimed "China experts" have popped up practically overnight. Some of these opportunists can't read or write the language, and often don't have first-hand experience to back up what they're talking about. In order to read the newspapers, conduct business transactions, or speak with authority about the country's politics and financial policies, you must know the language thoroughly.
Now, I don't expect you to run out and sign up for the next language class you see—that's why you have me in your corner. After reading local Chinese reports, talking with heads of businesses in China and having my boots-on-the-ground team interview Chinese customers and employees, I make the decision on whether or not to recommend certain companies for purchase. I don't see any other way to safely invest in China. If you want complete access to all of the companies I'm currently recommending in China Strategy, join today.
